A craft, food, fashion, home & shopping blog

My local church thrift store has been a little hit or miss lately, so I was super excited with my latest haul!
I picked up three Mason jars which I'll be using to create more faux Mercury-glass.
I was intrigued by this book.  It's from the 1950s/60s and I'm always amazed at what kids did back them.  My boys get a kick out of these books too.  They don't understand a world without an iPad or video games.  Also, can you see the little angel cookie cutter in front of the book.  Super cute!
These old wood clothes pins will come in handy for my upcoming craft fair.
Can't forget this apothecary jar and wood candlesticks.

All this for $5.  Score!

I'm obsessed.  I finally picked up a can of Krylon's Looking Glass Spray Paint at my local Ace Hardware.  All I can say is: I. Am. In. Love!
I found a tutorial on Pinterest detailing how to make your own faux mercury glass-looking Mason jars, apothecary jars, glass bowls, etc. This guy was my first attempt.
I have to say it was super easy to do.  You simply do 2-3 sprays on your jar with the paint.  I let that dry before I moved on to step 2: add 50/50 water and vinegar mixture to a spray bottle.  Spray wherever you desire and then blot the bubbles with a paper towel.  I only blotted for this one, but you can also wipe the vinegar/water mixture to make it more dramatic.  Then do a follow up coat of paint.  Let dry and pretty soon you'll be swooning over your latest masterpiece!

The weather here has left me a bit confused.  Last Tuesday, I had the air on because it was so hot and muggy.  Come Thursday and we wanted to put the heat on - it was that cold!  So it's no wonder my latest projects have been all over the place.
I made some Ouija Board Halloween tags for my Etsy.  That was when it was still warm out.  Once it got cold, I made this:
A reindeer pillow.  I actually made two using TAP paper, a Pottery Barn pillow insert and fabric paint.  I found the reindeer silhouette on Pinterest.

I guess it's a good thing I have Xmas on my mind because I've decided to do a holiday craft fair in November.  I haven't done a fair in over 5 years and I'm feeling a bit rusty.  Still, I've got to get the creative juices flowing and this was a good start.

Rainy, humid and miserable in New York, but I'm still glad it's officially autumn.

What do you do when you're having a really bad day?  You do something that makes you happy.  And for me, that means putting out some Halloween touches.
I call it Halloween-therapy.
The boys were at school.  The hubby was at work.  The house was quiet.  I got to lose myself for a little while as I was dressing up our corner hutch.
I try to change things up from how I did them last year.  Some pieces remain in place - like the vintage Underwood typewriter.
Some pieces, I've had for years.
I also created this simple banner that I have hanging in our dining room.  I still need to add some ravens to each end.

I definitely felt much better once I had everything in its place.

So this is the stool I picked up from the thrift store last week now...
It's so petite and I was really excited to give it a fresh look.  I first gave it a few coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Paris Grey.  I wanted to try the wax paper transfer method, but it was an epic fail.
I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I could not get the ink to transfer on to the wood.  So I had to scrap that plan, repaint the top of the stool and figure out my next step.
I decided to give the Mod Podge method another go.  I haven't always been successful with that method either.  It's always been hit or miss.  This time I think it worked out well.  After sanding down the top and the image, I'm happy with my vintage-looking, petite French stool!
