A craft, food, fashion, home & shopping blog

We had two estate sales in the neighborhood yesterday.  While the boys were at school, I popped by both.  Holy moly!  Boy, were they loaded!
I could have gone crazy at the second one but the prices were a bit steep.  I might head over later today to see if there are any better deals to be had.
Love the religious statue.  I can't recall the saint's name though.  The chalkboards are real slate.  I can't stand the faux ones so I grabbed two of them.
I never pass up sheet music!  The scale is my favorite find.  It needs a good cleaning.  I'm debating on whether or not to paint it.  The Mason jar was 50 cents!
Not a bad haul.  I spent about $23 on everything.

I found this frame at an estate sale a couple of months ago.  At first, I was going to paint it white but the blue hue kind of grew on me.  It's kind of a weird, long size so I wasn't sure what to do with it.  Finally, I decided to make it into a chalkboard frame.
I attached some self-sticking chalkboard paper to a cardboard insert.  I simply slipped it in the slots.  There was a little gap on top so I just painted a wood piece black and glued it on the back.  You can probably notice it at the top.  I can live with it though!
I still felt it was missing a little something so I added the keyhole.  You can really notice the wood piece now but overall, I'm pretty happy with this quick update and even happier that fall starts officially in two more days!

I get to enjoy summer Fridays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  And even though today was a rainy mess, I ventured out to an estate sale not too far from my parent's house.  As luck would have it, it was held by a woman who is a mixed media artist and shabby chic collector.  I could hardly contain myself!
The two painted wood frames were $1 each.  I plan on painting the memory box/letter box white and hanging it in my craft room.  It was $5.  The wire basket was the most expensive at $15 but well worth it.
I'm a sucker for little baskets!
And I could not resist the boxes of pastel easter eggs for $1 each.
It's hard to tell what the above photo is but it's actually, two little vintage wire baskets and one tall one that holds a test tube sized vase.  Cute, cute, cute!  I'll be adding those to my Etsy shop after I jazz them up a little.  Not pictured is another great stack of sheet music.

There is another local estate sale here tomorrow and I can't wait!  Hoping it will be as fruitful as today's!

I popped over to a local estate sale this morning.  I had gone last week but the prices were outrageous.  I thought maybe this morning they'd be more flexible and they were...on certain items.
I picked up these vintage graters to hang in the kitchen.  The small one actually has a peeler at the top.
Not sure if you can tell but this mason jar has a crown on it.  How could I pass that up for $2?
Do you see it?  I'm not sure it has the right lid but I can live with it.
These little vintage crates used to house cream cheese.  Yup, that's how they used to deliver it to your house.  I love when the old timers share a bit of history with me.  My grandfather worked in a food store in Brooklyn and I wonder if he used to deliver these around the neighborhood back in the 30s?!  I will have to ask my mom.

I'm bummed, though, because they had a vintage Coca Cola crate ($15) and two vintage scales ($50 each) that I just couldn't justify buying.  Considering Cola crates are barely fetching $10 on Ebay these days, I know they were a bit overpriced.  Overall, I'm happy with my haul.

I picked up this pair of frames at an estate sale a couple of weeks ago.  What made them so very interesting is that they had a small piece of canvas in the back instead of the usual cardboard backing.  I wasn't sure what to do with them since the canvas kept falling out.  Finally, I decided to test some Avery label paper on the canvas part and here's how they came out:
I love that I didn't have to repaint them.  All I did was cut the label paper to fit the canvas.  Peel, stick and done!  Well not quite.
Because the canvas kept coming out, I had to glue it on.  So far so good.  For one of them, I glued some tea-stained seam binding to the back so it could be easily hung up.
I really love the Alice scene in both of them!  And they really do look like someone drew or painted them onto canvas.

I am definitely not a morning person.  But it pays off when you stay awake after dropping the kids off at school and head out for some garage sale shopping.  You cannot believe the loot I scored today.  I can hardly believe it myself.  So hard to contain my excitement!  Lookie:
This old sewing box is just what I need for my craft room.  I love the old ad and image on the front.  I'm not sure if it's a repro or an actual vintage find, but I love it nonetheless.
Could not pass up this old Smith Corona typewriter for $3.
Oodles and oodles of vintage sheet music, oh my!  It was marked $7 for all but I got them for $5.
Nice stack of old books - 50 cents each!
This old fan is gorgeous.  No spray paint makeover needed here.  Although it does remind me why they don't make fans like this anymore.  Small hands + fan blades = mother's worst nightmare.
This stamp wheel with stamps was only $1.  I also snatched up some star tart tins (in my Etsy shop), old wood bats and the Pilgrim box below.
Definitely in my glory today!  I went to 6 different sales and spent about $26 for everything.  Woo hoo!  And the weekend has only just begun...

I saw a gorgeous, vintage pink fan on Pinterest that I'm hopelessly in love with.  What are the chances of me finding one during my estate and garage sale escapades?  I'm thinking slim to none so I came up with an alternate plan:
Paint a vintage one pink instead.
I did find this one at an estate sale earlier this month and it was a yucky gray.  All it took was a few coats of pink spray paint and voila: I have my vintage, pink fan.

Of course now I'll find the real thing - ha!  And never you mind that poop looking stuff on the tea room wall.  It's some sort of spray insulator stuff my husband used when he built it.  Bleah!  I'm hoping to get that stuff out of there this year because, well, it looks like poop!

Well it seems the warmer weather is finally here to stay (I hope, I hope!).  We spent a lovely weekend outdoors, doing some much-needed Spring cleaning around the yard.  It was also the perfect weekend to get some spray painting in.  Remember this little bench I found at an estate sale earlier this month?  I finally got around to sprucing it up:
After cleaning off all of the dust and cobwebs, I gave it a few coats of flat white spray paint.
Once that was dry, I printed out this great image from The Graphics Fairy.  I've seen people using it for everything from a Lazy Susan to a coffee table so I knew it would fit perfectly on my my bench.
I used graphite paper to stencil it onto the seat of the bench.  It's my second time using graphite paper and I'm finally getting the hang of it.  My advice: use a pen when tracing and try not to lean on the paper when tracing.  I had a few smudges that I tried to cover up with some acrylic paint.
I found the perfect spot for her in the corner of my tea room.

We hit an estate sale this morning.  The weather was dreary and the wait was long, but I did manage to score some great vintage finds:
I think I'm definitely going to paint this little fan pink.
I could not resist these opera glasses with case.  I just love them!  Same for the vintage lace gloves.  Love!
I also got this cute little bench for $10.  Funny thing is, I have a similar one I'm using to display some vintage toys in an alcove at the top of our stairs.
My husband picked out the tins which are probably from the 1960s or 1970s.
I kind of like the green.

We spent about $40 on everything!  Not bad for a Thursday!
