Okio B Designs

A craft, food, fashion, home & shopping blog

We had two estate sales in the neighborhood yesterday.  While the boys were at school, I popped by both.  Holy moly!  Boy, were they loaded!
I could have gone crazy at the second one but the prices were a bit steep.  I might head over later today to see if there are any better deals to be had.
Love the religious statue.  I can't recall the saint's name though.  The chalkboards are real slate.  I can't stand the faux ones so I grabbed two of them.
I never pass up sheet music!  The scale is my favorite find.  It needs a good cleaning.  I'm debating on whether or not to paint it.  The Mason jar was 50 cents!
Not a bad haul.  I spent about $23 on everything.

I went to my local Michael's over the weekend and nearly died laughing when I saw what they were calling a redneck wine glass!  They glued a mason jar to a candlestick:
They added some red paint and affectionately called it a redneck wine glass.  As luck would have it, I had a dollar store candlestick and a mason jar available, so I made one.
I'm using mine to hold my hydrangeas - not wine.
So simple to make.  You just need a candlestick, mason jar and E6000 or similar glue.  And some wine...=)

I popped over to a local estate sale this morning.  I had gone last week but the prices were outrageous.  I thought maybe this morning they'd be more flexible and they were...on certain items.
I picked up these vintage graters to hang in the kitchen.  The small one actually has a peeler at the top.
Not sure if you can tell but this mason jar has a crown on it.  How could I pass that up for $2?
Do you see it?  I'm not sure it has the right lid but I can live with it.
These little vintage crates used to house cream cheese.  Yup, that's how they used to deliver it to your house.  I love when the old timers share a bit of history with me.  My grandfather worked in a food store in Brooklyn and I wonder if he used to deliver these around the neighborhood back in the 30s?!  I will have to ask my mom.

I'm bummed, though, because they had a vintage Coca Cola crate ($15) and two vintage scales ($50 each) that I just couldn't justify buying.  Considering Cola crates are barely fetching $10 on Ebay these days, I know they were a bit overpriced.  Overall, I'm happy with my haul.

If you're like me, you stock up on tea towels when you go to the dollar store.  I had a few lying around in my craft room and as luck would have it, I had some iron-on transfer paper too.  Put two and two together and you get some cute new towels:
I bought this image off of Etsy (popalicious, 99 cents!) over the weekend.  I spied it on Pinterest (thanks Gina from Shabby Creek Designs!) and thought it was just the cutest thing ever.
Ask my sister Kathy (Creative Home Expressions) and she will agree that we grew up with a lot of whales in our house.  Our dad loves them!  I used regular dollar store towels and simply ironed on the image using the transfer paper.  Then I sewed on some ruffle trim to dress them up a bit.
I had one random towel left (I usually like to make them in pairs), so I thought this mason jar from The Graphics Fairy would work perfectly!  I like the hint of color it gives to the island in my kitchen.

The sun is back out today so hopefully I can get some painting done!

I saw this idea on Pinterest yesterday and thought it was so sweet and simple that I just had to copycat:
A clear mason jar filled with some fresh pine cones and an evergreen branch (courtesy of my neighbor's pine tree!) with a couple of candy canes.
I love the simplicity of it and the fact that I had everything I needed for a quick little holiday touch.
And since simple seems to be my word of the day, here's the cowbell and little frame at got at the estate sales this weekend.  A little gold vignette of sorts.  The bottle brush trees are from Home Goods.  I want to swap out the photo of the girl praying with a black & white one of my mom and dad but there is something about the little girl that speaks to me.
I bought these little acorns from Walmart last year.  Surprisingly, I did not see them this year.  Bummer because I would have loved a few more.  Anywho, I filled my little black tray with vintage sheet music and added the acorns.

Sometimes I like to keep it simple.
