What do you do when in the midst of spring cleaning you come across a random block of wood?  You turn it into a petite farmhouse sign!
And that's just what I did.  I gave it a few coats of white spray paint and then glued on some Tim Holtz cardstock letters (after painting them black).  Sand a bit for a more aged look...
And voila: instant farmhouse decor that cost $0.

The best-selling item in my Etsy shop is hands-down my French script candles.  Problem is, I'm a type-A personality and if there's even something slightly off with them, I will not sell them.  So what do I do with all the cast-offs?
I add some here and there.  This is an upcycled zinc watering can.  I cleaned her up and added some French stickers and a bunch of my candles tied with twine.  Can you see them at the tippy-top????
And since it was so nice here today, I got around to spray painting some old soup cans that I plan to use as little planters.
I found my images on The Graphics Fairy and used some Mod Podge to add them to the front of the cans.  But back to the candles...
Here are a few more tucked away in a vintage flour sifter that sits in my tea room.  They are literally everywhere!  And since I don't mind the imperfections, I happily display them wherever I can.

Every year in school around Earth Day (Saturday, April 22nd this year), my boys come home asking how they can do their part to help save the earth.
This year, I sent away for the seed packets Cheerio's was giving away in an effort to "bring back the bees."  Since, we plant wild flowers every spring, I didn't pay too much mind to the newspaper articles criticizing the seed packets.  On Saturday - weather-permitting - we'll be planting those babies.

And speaking of Earth Day, I wanted to share some recent eco-friendly finds.
My little guy love, love, loves this Live Clean Liquid Hand Soap, which is good news for this mama because 9 year olds aren't always the best hand-washers.  I love that it's eco-friendly and that it smells divine.
I never tried this brand before: Macadamia Professional, but I have high hopes that their Weightless Shampoo and Anti-Humidity Holding Spray will work wonders on my flat, frizzy and perimenopausal hair.  Again, eco-friendly.
And I adore Aveeno's Positively Radiant daily moisturizer because it contains SPF 15 and doesn't make my skin freak out. I've been using it for years and now that we'll be outside more, I have to protect my fair, freckled face.

What are some of your favorite eco-friendly finds and how will you be observing Earth Day?

Note: I was provided with free samples from some of the companies mentioned above.  However, all opinions, photos, text, etc. are my own.

The weather is finally beautiful here.  The boys are off from school for spring break, and I'm starting to prep for Easter company.  I found this petite basket at the thrift store last week and turned it into a little nest to add to my Easter table.  Now back to planning my menu...

April showers are in full swing today in New York, but that didn't stop me from putting together this sweet spring vignette for our porch.
Don't you just love that bunny from Home Goods?!  I picked him up a couple of years ago.  I'm tempted to leave him out all year.
I love the look of a bundle of candles.  I tied a bunch of my French script candles together with twine and added them to this little lantern.
I've also been busy making some of these little guys.  I have them all around the house.

The weatherman is calling for 60 degree weather here tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to getting outside to do some painting.

A bit of a departure from my usual posts, but it's been something we've been dealing with.  And you know sometimes writing it out makes you feel better.

Why I’m Not Letting My Son Play With Your Son

My son can be a jerk.

Sometimes he doesn’t share.  He’ll quit a game if it doesn’t go his way.  He’ll rat you out in a heartbeat.  Some might argue this is typical behavior for a 9 year old.  I say, no, he’s being a jerk.

While that statement certainly won’t win me any Mother of the Year awards, it still gives me comfort.  How?  Because I know each episode is a teachable moment.  He’ll be punished.  He’ll lose privileges.  He’ll cry and tell me I’m the meanest mother in the world.  And I’ll smile because I know that one of my jobs as a mother is to help make him a productive member of society.

I’m a realist.  I don’t sugarcoat much.  If you’re acting like a jerk, I’ll call you out on it.

But along with the negatives is a little boy who says “please” and “thank you.”  He has a laugh that is contagious.  He will ask you if you’re okay if you get hurt on the playground.  He’ll protect a helpless bug or animal, and he will give you a shoulder to cry on.  He’s a good friend to have.

So when your son – a now former friend – took to tormenting him daily in school and on the bus, it hurt.  Big time.  It hurt me as a mom and it hurt my son who didn’t know why or how it was happening.  He stood his ground though and gave back as good as he got.  Yet, when I let you know what was happening, you turned the tables.  Your son became the victim.  You believed every word that came out of his mouth – even after you were told other people confirmed what was really going on.

I’ve heard excuses like, “He’s sooooo smart and that’s why he doesn’t get along with other kids his age” or “Well, he was born in November so he’s younger than everyone in his grade.”  I’ve heard “My son doesn’t use those words” or “He does his homework on the bus, how could he be bothering your son?”  I’ve heard it all and I cry B.S.

So Mom, YOU are the reason I won’t let my son play with your son anymore.  If you had just acknowledged that your son could be a jerk too, we could get past this.  But you can’t accept that your son might not be perfect (I know mine isn’t).  Your son might use words like “idiot” or “stupid.”  Your son might be poking and pushing other kids.  Your son might actually be the cause of some problems.  Yes, I know it’s a bitter pill to swallow.  But if you could just get out of your state of denial, you, too, might want to take advantage of these teachable moments.

Yes, my son can be a jerk.  But yours can be too.  It doesn’t mean you’ve failed.  It means you’re a mother.

Sigh!  We're expecting a major snowstorm/blizzard/nor'easter tonight.  Just when I thought winter was over, Mother Nature throws me a curve ball.
School is closed tomorrow, so my boys will be home.  Luckily, I did manage to get in a few craft projects last week.  Hard to tell but this is an Easter book stack.
I also dressed up these faux dollar store plants by placing them in bunny peat pots.  I have them displayed on my Antique Farmhouse scale.
How cute are these candy jars?  They're actually upcycled food jars.
I used the shipping tape transfer method to get my images on the front of each jar, and filled them with some Easter chocolates.
Surprisingly, we still have a lot of the candy left.  After tomorrow though that could all change...

I'm sooooo ready for spring.  I don't know about you, but I feel like winter has zapped my motivation.  Most days I sit down to craft and I got nothing.  The most I've been able to eek out are these sweet religious frames.
I used two petite frames and these beautiful religious images.  Both are available in my Etsy.
I also did a copycat pillow from one I saw in Country Living magazine.  I think the cross should be bigger so I'm probably going to redo it.

And that's it.  I have a million ideas floating around in my mind, but I can't seem to get the nudge I need to get moving on them. Hopefully warmer weather is right around the corner as I have a ton of painting projects I want to get started on.

I've been wanting to do a book page wreath for years now.  To be honest, the whole concept has always scared the bejesus out of me. I had visions of hot gluing my fingers together or running out of pages halfway through.  Still, I took the plunge during the week and...
Made this sweet little wreath for our front door.  I found a super simple tutorial to follow from Pinterest.  It's the one where you use a mascara tube to bunch of your pages and then simply glue them on (one at a time) to your wreath.
The whole project took about 30 minutes and I only hot glued my fingers twice!  Seriously, though, I only did one layer to start.  I feel like it needs another one, but I don't think it will fit between our glass door and wood door, so I'm going to stick with one layer for now.
I'm amazed at how easy it was and kind of kicking myself for not doing it sooner.

I love bunnies, don't you?  I have them all over the house and not just for Easter.  It must run in the family because my Mom and sister love them too.
I whipped up a few bunny projects earlier in the week.  For this sweet lavender bunny sachet, I used some Osnaburg fabric, Poly-Fil and lavender buds.  I thought the little bow was a cute touch.  It smells delish!
I also made this pretty bunny pillow using an image I found on Etsy.  Again, I used Osnaburg fabric and Poly-Fil.  I used the last of my TAP paper to get the image onto the front of the pillow.  Sadly, I see TAP paper is sold out almost everywhere.  Such a shame; it really is the best transfer paper out there.
I'm glad to have my crafting mojo back and with roughly a month to go until spring starts, I'm glad to know I'll be able to get outside and do some painting projects too.

Got a bit of my crafting mojo back.  And since it's a cold, miserable Sunday, I didn't mind staying in and spending time in my craft room.
This project took me literally 5 minutes from start to finish.
You probably know how much I love Ikea's stripe towels.  I've used them in a ton of projects and I always have a bunch on hand. Today I used one along with TAP paper and this great image from the Graphics Fairy.
Simply print your image onto the TAP paper (reversing it first), cut out, iron on and voila: instant tea towel.

I love how it looks against the black towels I have hanging from the oven.  The best part: these towels cost about 79 cents a piece!

I'm experiencing my third - yes, third! - cold of the season.

I had two boys home sick a few weeks ago.  Then one was home with a fever, runny nose and cough.  Just when I thought I was out of the woods...BANG!  I got hit with it.  Again.  Colds seem to go round-robin in my house and Mom is the one always down for the count.

I'm tired, cranky and counting down the days until spring so I can open some windows and let the germs out.

I love book stacks.  I have them all over the house.  Sure, it pains me to rip apart perfectly good books, but the end result is so worth it.
I'm not making much for Valentine's Day this year since I have a ton of decorations from previous years and I've simply run out of room.  Still, I wanted to make something.
I used three books, vintage lace, buttons, twine, my glue gun and some other pieces.  First, glue all of your lace onto the fronts of the books.  Then add your buttons.  I printed out the Cupid image onto sticker paper so I could just peel and stick it onto the first book.
Tie with twine and done!

I have three more books and will likely make another set just because I love them so much.

I haven't done silhouettes of my boys since they were 4 and 2.  I still have them framed and in our guest room. Since they are now 11 and 9, I figured it was time to do some new ones.
I used the same method I did the first time.  I took profile pics of both my boys, printed out the pictures and then cut out their profiles.  I then used the cut-outs to make my silhouette images using black cardstock.
I've had the round frames forever and last used them for a Pottery Barn knock-off project.  I also already had the ampersand wood piece.  These were added to my photo gallery wall which goes up the staircase to the second floor, so it was kind of hard to take some good pictures.
This is my big guy.
And this is my little guy.
I'm amazed that they still pretty much have the same profiles they had at 2 and 4.

This is such a sweet and simple project to do.  All you need are some kids (ha!), black frames, white paper, black cardstock, scissors and a printer.

Now that the holidays are behind us, I've been busy trying to de-clutter.  I just can't believe how much stuff we've accumulated through the years.
And every year I make the same resolutions: to de-clutter and stop spending money on things we don't need.  I'm really trying to stick to it this year, so I've been "shopping" the house.  The good thing about de-cluttering is you find things you forgot you had.
You also get to add a new twist to old favorites.  I love dusting off hidden frames to give them new life.
Or simply taking out decorations in preparation of the next holiday.
We've made a lot of progress, although I don't think our garbage men are loving us right now.  I've donated a ton of stuff, tossed a bunch of stuff and we've even been able to re-paint our basement (and by we, I mean, my husband).  It's a makeover in progress so stay tuned.

I hope everyone's new year is off to a great start!  I haven't started any new projects yet because I have two little boys home sick from school this week.
Lucky me, though, found a vintage Scrabble game before Christmas at our local Goodwill.  In between the holidays, I whipped up a few Frenchy desk "plaques."
All I needed was the Scrabble tiles, tile holder and hot glue gun.  I made the Bonjour and Merci ones for my Etsy shop.  I made myself a Bienvenue one, which I have on our tv table as a sweet welcome.
I actually made this little Love Scrabble ornament last year. Somehow it got buried in my craft room (don't you hate when that happens?!).  I was happy to find it as I'll be decorating for Valentine's Day soon.
Don't you love working with Scrabble tiles?!
