Okio B Designs

A craft, food, fashion, home & shopping blog

I'm a firm believer that if life hands you lemons, you make lemonade.  Case in point, my broken dress form peat pot.
I bought some rub-on transfers from Joann's a couple of weeks ago.  Now, I'm no expert on rub-ons.  I've only used them a handful of times.  After rubbing for what seemed like forever, this transfer just didn't seem to be happening.  So I kept at it.
I must have moved it while rubbing because it didn't exactly come out intact.  As you can see, it looks, well, broken.  Rather than toss the whole thing and move on to plan B, I decided it still had personality and potential.  So I added some French book paper, a little flower bling and some shredded sheet music.  To me, she's perfect now!
And these are a few more I did with a little less drama.  They are in my Etsy shop.

I wouldn't say I've mastered rub-ons but I have it down to an inexact science.

We're hosting the grandparents this year for Easter.  I'm already playing around with the table settings to get an idea of what will look the prettiest.  I bought a pretty Chevron table runner from Etsy that will match the plates perfectly.  Here's what I have so far:
I will have to mix and match plates because the ones you see I got from the Pottery Barn outlet a few years ago - but are only for four.  The egg cups are also from the outlet.
I made these silverware sacks last night.  I printed out the image (from the Graphics Fairy) onto clear label paper and placed them on some glassine sacks.  I'll be using our numbered napkins too.  They need some serious ironing though first.
Each setting will get its own peat pot with a personalized name.  I used Dafont.com to print out names on plain white paper.  Then I made them into little banners and used Glue Dots to fix them onto my appetizer sticks.

Luckily I have another week to play around with everything!

I'm looking forward to a fruitful garden this year.  My dad has offered to help me pick the perfect spots in our yard.  You see, we do well with tomatoes and cucumbers, and some random herbs, but my eggplant and green peppers never seem to take off.  Anywho, I decided to start early this year with some of our seeds.  Of course, I had to dress up my peat pots just a little.
These mini peat pots were something like 10 for $1.  I painted each white to start.  While the paint was drying, I hand-stamped basil, oregano and mint onto tissue paper.  I ripped the tissue paper as close to the lettering as possible and glued it on with Mod Podge.
I gave each piece of tissue paper a coating on top after the first coat dried.  Now I know which seed goes in which pot, and which herb is in which pot (and the pots look a little cuter!).
I also did this seeds one but I think the stamps were a little big for the pots.  Doh!

Saw this on Pinterest and thought it was the sweetest idea ever!  Bunny peat pots for Easter.
First I painted my peat pots white.  One coat usually does the trick because you want a shabby look.  While they were drying I printed off my bunnies onto tissue paper.  One is from Etsy and the other is from The Graphics Fairy.
Next you kind of rip the tissue paper to get as close to the image as possible.  Don't worry, you can barely see the edges when you get to the next step: Mod Podge.
Give the back of each image a light coat of Mod Podge and try to stick it to your pot quickly as it will curl.  Once the image is stuck on (and dry), give it a layer of Mod Podge on top.  In just a few minutes, you have some neat little peat pots to fill with all sorts of goodies.  These are going to be our place settings this year for Easter.

Anyone else ready for spring?  I'm counting down the days after a horribly cold week here.  Peat pots always make me think of warmer days, so I embellished a couple over the weekend while we were staying warm indoors.
First I gave them a coat of white acrylic paint.  Then I ran some tissue paper through a printer to get these great French graphics.
I used Mod Podge to adhere them to each pot.  I love how the tissue paper seems to disappear and you're left with a beautiful image.
I finished them off with a simple faux pearl and stuffed them with faux Dollar Store moss.  They'll be ready for some spring touches in just a few weeks!

I still have a bunch of peat pots left over from the summer.  Since I'm still avoiding the chaos of the stores and malls (and still working with what I already have in the house), I decided to make a couple of new embellished ones.
I gave each a coat of white acrylic paint.  I tried my hand at doing a mixed media one with the little girl.  The image is from The Graphics Fairy and with Newtown on my mind, I wanted to use something with a little girl or boy.
I printed out the image on cardstock and stuck it on with Glue Dots.  I added some pink glitter to her wand and hat.  Then I added some distressed French poetry book paper, the twine, number 15 and a Paris clothes pin.  For now, the pot is filled with some shredded sheet music.
For the second one, I wanted to keep it simple.  I added some French script on cardstock to the bottom.  I had a leftover star from the peace sign I did a few weeks ago, so I added that to the top.  This one is filled with faux Dollar Store moss.
I have a few ideas for some Valentine's Day ones but I promise, I am not starting Valentine's Day projects...yet!

I popped into our local Goodwill this morning.  The last few times I was there, I left empty-handed.  Not today.  Lookie at my latest finds:
I've been searching for these very pyrex dishes at every garage sale I've been to this year.  The set of three was $5.99 - a steal!  I also picked up the little pumpkin candleholder, peat pots and pretty blue glass dishes.
Aren't they a gorgeous shade of blue?
Lastly, I picked up this pail duo.  I think I'm going to work on transforming it first.  While, I like the floral pattern, I think something Frenchy would better fit my style.

Overall, I spent $20 there this morning and I'm quite happy with my haul!

I'm really enamored with painted peat pots.
They are so easy to dress up.
And really fit anywhere in the house.
I like to give them a French touch or two.
Yup, it must be love!

I made a few more painted peat pots this week and I think I'm becoming a little obsessed.  For this batch, I added some number tags along with the buttons I used on my previous bird one:
The first one is filled with rolled vintage sheet music and ones I downloaded from The Graphics Fairy.
The other two I'm still deciding on what to fill them with.  For now they are filled with shredded sheet music.  I'm leaning towards adding some fresh greens and pinecones to them for a natural, festive look.

I love that these are super simple to make and I think they'll transition nicely into my regular home decor after the holidays!
